 Gorse Hill Nature Reserve Aims...
  • To help reverse the wildlife habitat loss that is happening in the North West.
  • To stimulate public and private interest in the care for and education concerning the role of our natural flora and fauna.
  • To provide field study areas for the benefit of students of all ages and to collaborate with the appropriate voluntary institutions and statuatory authorities.
  • To acquire permanent interest in suitable areas of land and promote the conservation and natural history interest of the sites so they develop their full potential.

With your help we can save our natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

You can:

Become a member - entitling you to our newsletter Nature Trail, invitations to special events and training in wildlife conservation. Membership starts at £15.

Become a volunteer (you do not need to be a member to do this). Our volunteer days are every Wednesday and Saturday. We open at 9.30 a.m. and people try and arrive near that time so that jobs for the day can be organised and allocated effectively.

We generally end the day about 4.00 p.m. but you need not commit to the whole day. There are, of course, breaks for lunch and an afternoon cup of tea/coffee! We meet at the Visitor Information Cabin and limited car parking is available.

You will need suitable outdoor clothing and footwear; the ground in some parts of the Reserve is uneven and can be boggy. A pair of strong thorn-proof gloves would come in handy but they can be provided for you on the day. All necessary equipment will be provided.

Our volunteers cover a wide age range and include family groups. Bring a packed lunch but we will provide tea/coffee (and biscuits!). Gorse Hill is a developing Nature Reserve and there are many different opportunities to get involved with. The following will give you an idea of the sorts of things you could do: planting trees and shrubs; woodland management; pond creation and maintenance; bird box surveys and maintenance; small mammal surveys; wildflower plant production and planting out in the hay meadows; creation of wildlife habitats; hay making; identification and surveys of a variety of flora and fauna; and maintenance of various types of machinery.

It does not matter if you have never done any of these things before, there will be someone to help you and give advice and find you something to do. Its not all hard work, there are opportunities to socialize through occasional events for members and volunteers. Come and see for yourself as tasks vary throughout the year, or use the contact names and numbers for more information.

We look forward to seeing you!
